Over the past year, SAIL has defined its purpose: to encourage educational endeavors and activities in the Sayville Public Schools that engage, excite and entice young people to broaden their educational opportunities and experiences. The process has been long but ultimately satisfying. SAIL reviewed its first applications in the summer of 2007. Each reflected thoughtfulness and creativity. Following our review of these ideas with Dr. Rosemary Jones, the SAIL Board of Directors approved these grants. They blend well with our mission, while helping to support the educational programs already energizing Sayville’s students. Grantees are responsible to comply with SAIL’s reporting requirements. The receipts or proofs of district expenditures for all project costs covered by the grant must be supplied to SAIL at program’s end. Each award winner must provide a written summary of the program’s results for inclusion in the foundation’s annual report.

Around 40 students in grades 6-8 were served. The 2006 catapult is still available. SAIL funding is provided to construct a second, larger catapult, capitalizing on lessons learned last year. The intent to enter the new machine, and a modified version of the original, in this year’s competition.

Additional funds are granted for the Friendship Patch program, which would encourage interaction and comfort levels among students through the development of lunch table emblems. In lieu of the Friendship Patch program, the grantee may use this allocation toward the development of a Character Garden, would integrate thoughtful discussion of good traits with the planting of an actual garden. |
